Advanced search can be reached by selecting the blue text "more search options" from the News & Research Menu (function N).
Alternatively, after performing a "regular" news search, select Actions -> Use Advanced Editor from the red bar on top to access it.
We are met with the following user interface:
We will start by typing our query in the search bar. We are looking for news related to the company Microsoft, so we select it from the drop-down menu. Searching in natural language works here as well.
Upon selecting it, the company appears in the Search Terms section and a preview of results appears on the bottom part of the screen:
Not only can we search for the terms, but we can also exclude certain ones from the results by using the outlined drop-down menu below.
Let us exclude Apple Inc. from the results. Excluded terms are preceded with a "NOT" in the Search Terms section.
The Browse button on the right side of the search bar can be used to browse for search terms in different categories and sub-categories. Clicking on it opens a new window, where we choose Regions -> Europe. It can be observed from the screen capture below that we could keep digging deeper as well. After clicking on Europe, choose Select.
As expected, Europe now appears in the Search Terms section in the Regions row. Note that the amber box in the Browse Categories can be used to search through the selected category only. For example, we can select People and then input the current CEO of Microsoft and select him from recommendations.
Use Categories section to add/edit selected filters for this category. Let us select Topics and then add Mergers & Acquisitions in the window that opened. Then, choose Close and the filter is added. Unwanted filters can be removed by clicking on the "x" next to their name.
Additional settings, such as news sources, languages, dates, length of news and more can be applied by using the outlined bar below:
The search parameters that were set can be saved using the Save button on the bottom of the screen. The search can later be accessed from Custom Searches in the red bar on top of the screen.
To run the search and get a list of all relevant headlines, click Run on the bottom of the screen.
