To perform a top-down analysis of a selected industry, we can use function ICS (Classification Browser). There are over 2000 distinct industries available, and for which we can explore their market sizes, companies that compete in in, their revenues and more.
The Classification Hierarchy section on the left allows us to select the desired industry — either from the amber search bar or by digging into categorically sorted sectors. We can select a broader category or dig as deep as possible to a very specific classification.
On the right side we can see the the Aggregate Statistics for the currently selected industry and its members (section Member Companies). The members for which the currently selected industry is their primary, are denoted with a "*" next to their name. Each time we select an industry in the Classification Hierarchy section, the data on the right gets updated accordingly.
Industry Summary section on the top-right allows us to include size or geographical filters.
By clicking on a company from the Member Companies table, the company opens using the CCB (Company Classification Browser) function, which shows its revenues by industry in the Hierarchy section. By choosing the small outlined blue symbol, the revenues get segregated by regions in a new small window.
Clicking on the outlined document symbols transfer us to the related Bloomberg Intelligence report files.
Data from the tables can be exported as well. By clicking on the Export option from the red bar, an Excel file with data from the Member Companies table will get downloaded.
Function GRR (Group Ranked Returns) ranks the equity index groups or sectors by their returns for selected period, and compares them to the selected index as a whole.
Use the Period drop-down to select the observed period — choose one of the offered options or use Custom at the bottom and then fill in the desired start and end date.
Movers tab displays the 10 best and the 10 worst performing groups or sectors of the selected index:
Tab All displays a table of all groups or sectors with their recent returns.
To do a similar thing for the current trading day, function IMAP (Intraday Market Map) can be used.
From the outlined amber box we can select the desired index, a custom portfolio etc.
We can group the companies by their sectors or regions or filter them based on their size. Using the outlined tabs, we can also switch between different views.
In both the chart and table views, we can click on a category to open a deeper fragmentation into sub-categories. This can be done until the end is reached. Then, a list of the constituents of the category with their market data and weights gets displayed.
The subscription from SEB LU also allows us to get some data from Bloomberg Intelligence, which provides research and insights from the markets. Let us look at one example regarding North American restaurants. Note that for different industries, different kinds of data may be available and thus the selections, tabs and displays can differ among them.
Use function BI (Bloomberg Intelligence).
On the BI homepage we can use the left section to choose the desired industry. For the purposes of this example, we find and select Restaurants.
We arrive on the so-called Dashboard Home, where research headlines for the industry are presented along with some basic financial data. The leftmost segment allows us to navigate to the desired topic from categories Research, Data Library and Monitor.
Now we can for example choose Market Share under Data Library to show the main competitors of the industry. By clicking on the below outlined little arrow next to a company's name, sub-categories with their own segmented data appear.
To analyze performance of the industry's competitors, choose Comp Sheets under Monitor. Tabs (5 different for this industry) with different kinds of data are available to choose from. The red Export button allows us to download the table from the currently selected tab to Excel.
