Instructions for use

Function PRTU (Portfolio Administration)

Use function PRTU (Portfolio Administration) to create and manage your portfolios.

A page with a list of currently existing portfolios opens. From the red bar, choose Create to create a new one and Actions to customize the view. Upon selecting one or more portfolios by ticking the outlined boxes, option Remove also gets available and can be used to delete the selected portfolios.

Creating a portfolio

Choose Create from the red bar to create a new portfolio.

A new window opens which allows us to set the preferences. Choose a name and then used Asset Class:

  • Equity for equities only,
  • Balanced for a mix of equities and fixed income securities,
  • FI for fixed income only, or
  • Fund of funds for a fund that invests in mutual funds.

Then, choose the Portfolio Currency (the base currency of portfolio that will be used to determine the value of portfolio and individual positions).

Position Type determines the configuration of portfolio. Choose:

  • Shares / Par Amount to build a portfolio based on a number of shares held,
  • Fixed Weight to use fixed percentages of market weights, which means constantly buying and selling stocks to maintain them (i.e., buying more shares of the stocks that perform bad to keep the weight and vice versa), or
  • Drifting Weight to use a percentage of market weights and then let it drift (the weights will change based on the assets' performance — in this case, stocks that will go up the most will generally have larger and larger weights over time in and vice versa).

We can also add a Benchmark against which our portfolio can be compared.

If needed, you also can customize other fields, which offer numerous additional options. Note that tab Advanced on top of the window also allows for some additional preferences. Click on Create when happy with the settings.

The settings can later be updated from the red bar by choosing Settings -> Portfolio, which will reopen the window.

Adding securities to a portfolio

Upon clicking Create, the page shown below opens. First, use the Date box to set the date when the position has been opened (and change the date each time the portfolio positions have been rebalanced). We will then be able to move to the previous and next portfolio rebalance date using the outlined little arrows on the sides of the date selection box.

To add securities to the portfolio, use the below outlined amber box. Find the one you want from the list and select it.

Note that we can also use drag and drop function between separate Bloomberg windows and can add the securities quicker this way from another list (as show in Some useful tips section). This can be done even from Excel by selecting multiple cells with company tickers and then use drag-and-drop to Bloomberg.

Securities can also be added in bulk from different lists via Actions -> Import Securities.

When a security has been selected, you can specify (based on the type of portfolio we selected) the number of shares (column Position) or weight (column Weight). Other values can also be customized.

To delete a rebelancement date, choose the pencil icon next to the date box. This will open a new window with a list all the currently selected rebalancement dates. Click on the red encircled X next to a rebalancement date to remove it.

Note that the portfolio building can get quite complicated, and thus there might be other advanced options you need to check and set up. Explore them by pressing <Help> (F1) when on the function page to access extensive help.

Function PORT (Portfolio & Risk Analytics)

To analyze the portfolios created above, we can use the PORT (Portfolio & Risk Analytics) function.

The screen capture below shows the PORT function page. If you see a different page, use PORT NEW instead as the function might not be completely updated.

To choose a portfolio you have created using the PRTU function, select [Create New] from the drop-down menu that appears from the outlined amber box.

The portfolio can be found under Portfolios in section Select a universe. Select it.

Then, go to the bottom-left corner of the screen and choose Create.

If there are problems with loading the data, look at the section on the left for any warning signs and update those settings.

For example, as shown below, the Universe 2 has been set to S&P benchmark, which is unavailable for some reason (maybe because of no subscription to this data). We change it to INDU (Dow Jones Industrial Average index) and then select Apply & Reload.

We can also set Classifications to GICS Sectors to display sector-data instead of by individual securities when performing analyses.

The function offers various tabs (outlined below) for different types of analysis:

Tabs from PORT function

Intraday: see the basic portfolio information, such as weights, market values, portfolio movers and movers against the benchmark etc.

Positions: display both instrument- and aggregate-level view of the portfolio holdings and perform optimizations or trading simulations.

Aggregate: flexible aggregate analytics for portfolio holdings vs. the benchmark.

Trend: perform multi-date analysis for a selected attribute (for individual securities or sectors).

The attribute can be chosen from the amber box above the table.

Aggregate w/ Returns: flexible aggregate analysis for the portfolio vs. the benchmark.

Add another tab

Additional tabs can also be included by clicking on the "+" symbol, which opens the following page with options to choose from (for example, choose Value at Risk to analyze the risk of maximum losses on the portfolio given a desired confidence interval):

Then, click on Create and the tab will appear in the bar with tabs:

The section on the left side allows us to change the confidence level and scaling of the VaR calculations, change the model etc.
