To use the so-called screener (used to filter the entities according to specific criteria) within the S&P Capital IQ Pro Plug-in for Excel, choose Screener/Data Wizard.
This opens a new window. Let us look at an example of its usage for companies and thus, choose the tab Companies (if we were for example searching among mergers and acquisitions, we would instead use the Transactions tab — the same logic would apply as with filtering companies).
On the left side, under the sections Recommended Criteria and Browse Criteria, some of the available criteria are categorized for a quick access.
We would like, for example, to filter the companies to only those whose primary activity is in the grocery stores industry. We select the Industry Classification criterion. In the menu in the middle of the screen, a list of industries is offered, among which we search for Grocery Stores. To find it, we need to expand the Retail category, which can be done by clicking on the black arrow next to the name. We repeat the process in subcategories until we reach the desired one.
As it can be observed from the top-right part of the screen, over 25.000 companies match our criterion. Let us add a new filter, this time choose Trading Multiples under Pricing & Market Data.
Find Market Capitalization / Valuation under Browse Criteria and choose Market Capitalization criterion. Set the filter to companies with market cap over 10 million USD and then click Add to apply it.
We can also add filters by entering them in the designated Add Criteria line below the list of currently set filters. Let us select Total Revenue.
After selection, the program guides us and presents options for us to choose from and proceed. This way, we create the desired condition, for his confirmation we select Add.
If we want to include columns with data in the results table without performing filtration or adding new conditions, we select Display Columns.
A window opens, in which we select the data to display. On the left size, we select for instance Total Return and then in the middle part of the window tick all the desired parameters — choose the last month and the last year and click Apply.
When we are satisfied with the criteria and display settings, choose Run Screen and the database will return a table of results.
By clicking on Export, the table will get exported to the opened Excel file.
The table with companies matching the selected criteria is now successfully exported to Excel.
